OTC trading centres on a direct quote from a desk. Exchange trading centres on orders placed with a trading venue. Compare the full transaction: how the price is set, how the order executes, how it settles and what support is available.

The differences that matter

OTC desk trading and exchange order-book trading
ConsiderationOTC deskExchange order book
PriceA quote for a specified transaction, subject to its terms and expiry.Depends on the order type and the prices available in the book.
ExecutionAgreed directly with the desk under the quoted terms.Matched according to the venue’s trading rules.
ContactA direct conversation about the transaction.Typically a self-service trading interface with venue support.
SettlementArrangements must be confirmed as part of the trade.Follows the venue’s account, funding and withdrawal processes.
CostCheck the quoted spread, fees and any additional costs.Check trading fees, spread, potential slippage and withdrawal costs.

Compare the total cost, not one number

A rate on a screen and an OTC quote may describe different things. One may be an indicative mid-market price; another may be an executable quote for a particular quantity. Use the total amount you would pay or receive to make a meaningful comparison.

For an exchange order, consider the trading fee and the effect of available liquidity. For a desk quote, confirm whether charges are included or added separately. Funding, conversion and withdrawal costs can also matter.

Understand how the trade becomes binding

Placing an exchange order may result in immediate execution, partial execution or no fill, depending on the order. The venue’s rules determine what happens.

For an OTC transaction, ask what constitutes acceptance, how long the quote is valid and what obligations follow. A draft enquiry should never be confused with an accepted quote.

Ask about settlement before choosing

Confirm where funds and digital assets need to be held, who sends first, which network is used and how receipt is confirmed. Check banking hours and blockchain confirmation requirements.

A desk relationship does not itself guarantee instant settlement. An exchange balance also does not necessarily mean assets have reached an external wallet or bank account. Look at the full path.

Which approach fits the transaction?

The answer depends on the trade and the provider’s terms. An order book gives you a trading interface and control over order placement. A desk gives you a direct conversation about a specified transaction.

Rather than assuming either is always better, compare the executable price, costs, execution conditions, counterparty arrangements and settlement process for the same asset and amount.

Five questions to take to the desk

  1. Is this quote indicative or executable?
  2. What is the total amount I will pay or receive?
  3. When does the quote expire, and how do I accept?
  4. How will both sides of the transaction settle?
  5. Which records will I receive after the trade?
